Waitrose is rolling out a new small-format “neighbourhood” store concept as part of its £1 billion UK expansion plan. The John Lewis Partnership-owned grocer has already opened around 20 of these shops nationwide. Waitrose currently operates roughly 320 stores across Britain, compared with over 1,000 for rival Marks & Spencer. The multi-year investment also covers a new south-west distribution centre and its first full-size supermarket in seven years.

Waitrose Targets High-Footfall Sites Nationwide

Waitrose’s neighbourhood format targets smaller, high-footfall locations rather than traditional supermarkets. The company says grocery shopping has shifted toward an “omnichannel experience” beyond weekly big shops.

  • Waitrose wants “right size, right location” sites across the UK.
  • The £1 billion plan also funds refurbishment of existing stores.

Five London stores, including Marylebone, Clerkenwell, and Coulsdon, are getting major makeovers with new bakeries and upgraded checkouts. A new convenience store recently opened in Wandsworth as part of this same rollout.

New Distribution Centre Supports Store Growth

Waitrose confirmed plans for its first south-west England distribution centre, located in Avonmouth, Bristol. The 360,000 square-foot facility will create more than 550 jobs, including 480 warehouse and 80 driving roles.

  • DHL will operate the site, beginning recruitment in early 2026.
  • Operations are scheduled to start in early 2027.

Supply chain director Alison Maffin said the facility “strengthens our network” as Waitrose scales its store count. The centre will serve 50 existing shops across the south-west while supporting future openings. It’s also expected to cut supply chain emissions by 2,225 tonnes of CO2 annually.

First Full-Size Supermarket Since 2018 Opens in Bristol

Waitrose confirmed a new 30,000 square-foot supermarket for the Brabazon development in Patchway, north Bristol. This marks the retailer’s first major new full-size store in seven years, set to open in 2027.

The store sits within a planned 6,500-home development featuring a new train station and a 19,000-seat arena. Management expects the site to generate around 150 local jobs once operational. This will become Bristol’s third Waitrose location, alongside its Gloucester Road and Queen’s Road branches.

Price Cuts Add to the Investment Push

Waitrose also launched a separate £20 million price-cutting campaign earlier this month, ahead of the store expansion news. The move slashed prices on more than 160 own-brand products across UK stores.

Nearly half of the discounted items come from the Essential Waitrose value range. Tom Denyard, who became Waitrose managing director in January 2026, is overseeing both the price cuts and store expansion. Denyard previously held senior roles at Tesco and Marks & Spencer before joining Waitrose.

Bottom Line

Waitrose’s £1 billion expansion signals real confidence following years of stagnant store growth under the John Lewis Partnership. Competing directly with Marks & Spencer’s 1,000-plus store network, Waitrose is betting on smaller, convenient formats rather than large-format supermarkets.

The combined push, spanning neighbourhood shops, a new distribution centre, and price cuts, suggests management sees room to grow market share. Rivals including Tesco, Sainsbury’s, and Ocado will likely watch closely as Waitrose tests this smaller-format strategy nationwide.
