The social security COLA increase for 2027 is 3.6%, the Social Security Administration announced on 14 October 2026. The cost-of-living adjustment covers Old-Age, Survivors, and Disability Insurance (OASDI) and Supplemental Security Income (SSI), and it will lift monthly checks for nearly 72 million beneficiaries starting in January 2027. For the average retiree, the raise works out to about $75 more per month.

What the social security COLA increase means for 2027

The 3.6% bump applies to Social Security retirement, survivors, and disability benefits. Increased payments to roughly 7.3 million people receiving SSI begin even earlier, on 31 December 2026, according to the SSA’s official announcement. Commissioner Frank J. Bisignano said beneficiaries will be able to view their COLA notices online starting in late November, up to three weeks earlier than the paper notices — the notice itself is a simplified one-page, plain-language document.

How the COLA is calculated

The adjustment is set by federal law and tied to the Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers (CPI-W). Each year, the SSA compares third-quarter CPI-W data with the year before, and the difference becomes the COLA — a mechanism designed to keep benefits roughly in line with inflation.

How 2027 compares with recent years

The 2027 figure of 3.6% sits above the 2.8% adjustment for 2026 and the 2.5% for 2025. It is well below the post-pandemic peak: as WABI reported, the biggest recent increase was 8.7% in 2023, when inflation was running much hotter.

Who gets the social security COLA increase and when

All OASDI beneficiaries see the higher amount from January 2027, while SSI recipients get it from the last day of 2026. The change touches households in every state — WABI reports that about 388,000 Mainers currently receive Social Security benefits and will all see their payments rise. The SSA also notes that Social Security has lifted some 106,000 people in Maine out of poverty every year, showing how central these payments are to local economies.

Disabled veterans and military retirees get the same 3.6% raise

The 2027 COLA extends beyond Social Security. Military retirees and disabled veterans will see their monthly paychecks rise by 3.6% as well, Military.com reported. VA disability checks rise by about $6.50 a month for a 10% rating and roughly $147.08 for a 100% rating. Special Monthly Compensation (SMC) and Dependency and Indemnity Compensation (DIC) payments also increase by 3.6%, and military retirees will see about $36 more for every $1,000 of retirement pay. Service members who retired during 2026 receive a prorated COLA.

What could eat into the raise

A bigger check does not automatically mean more spending power. University of Maine finance professor Pankaj Agrrawal cautions that higher medical and health care costs could offset much of the increase, as WABI reported. AARP’s Sweeney put it bluntly: “It’s not a bonus, it’s not extra money” — the adjustment is designed to keep up with inflation, not to enrich anyone. Medicare changes for 2027 are available at medicare.gov; premiums there are the main item retirees should watch before spending the extra dollars.

Why the social security COLA increase matters for markets

A 3.6% raise for 72 million people moves consumer spending, and consumer spending moves stocks. Retailers, consumer-goods companies, and health care providers are the first to feel shifts in retiree wallets, so investors tracking the fallout can watch how those sectors respond through Meyka’s US coverage: the US stock screener, the US earnings calendar, top US gainers and unusual volume across US markets.
