Kim Jong Un Crosses New China Bridge as Trade Ties Warm

Kim Jong Un crossed into China on Saturday, 24 October 2026, walking across a brand-new bridge into the border city of Dandong on his first visit to the country in a year. The trip, confirmed by South Korea’s government and reported by Chinese state media, underlines how North Korea is opening new trade routes to Beijing — and to Moscow — even as its leader keeps Washington at arm’s length.

The visit came a little over a week after the New Yalu River Bridge opened, and it was timed to land just before a symbolic date: 25 October, the anniversary of China’s first major victory in the Korean War.

Kim Jong Un crosses the New Yalu River Bridge

Kim crossed the 3-kilometre bridge from Sinuiju in North Korea to Dandong in China, accompanied by Wang Huning, China’s fourth-highest-ranked official, who conveyed greetings from President Xi Jinping. Chinese state television footage showed Kim walking on the bridge, and he also visited a Korean War memorial in Dandong and toured an automobile factory.

South Korea’s Unification Ministry said Kim appeared to have arrived in Dandong on Saturday after crossing the newly opened bridge. North Korean state media had not immediately reported the visit, and China’s Foreign Ministry did not respond to a request for confirmation.

This was Kim Jong Un’s first visit to China in a year and his sixth since taking power in late 2011. His last known visit was in September 2025, when he watched a military parade in Beijing alongside Vladimir Putin. Xi Jinping visited Pyongyang in June.

Japan’s Kyodo News reported strict traffic restrictions in parts of Dandong during the visit, with hotel rooms there unavailable for reservation — a sign of how tightly the trip was managed.

Why the bridge matters for trade

The New Yalu River Bridge has four lanes, stretches 3 kilometres across the Yalu River, and opened on 15 October, easing congestion on the ageing Friendship Bridge nearby. It is expected to accommodate two-way traffic around the clock, including container shipments and heavy cargo trucks, and to help move the heavy equipment, raw materials and energy products North Korea needs for development.

China remains Pyongyang’s main economic and diplomatic backer and accounts for most of its official trade. Wang told Kim that China was ready to use the bridge’s opening to expand personnel exchanges and economic and trade cooperation.

For Beijing, the bridge may be worth more geopolitically than economically: it anchors North Korea to China at a moment when Pyongyang is also deepening its ties with Moscow, and it gives China a direct stake in whatever crosses the Yalu next.

A second bridge, and a wider pivot

The Yalu crossing opened about a month after the first road bridge between North Korea and Russia, the Yakov Novichenko Bridge. Together, the two bridges give Kim something he has not had before: modern, high-capacity road links to both of his neighbours.

The Russia link carries particular weight. Since late 2024, Kim has sent ammunition and as many as 16,000 troops to support Vladimir Putin’s war in Ukraine, and in 2024 the two leaders signed a mutual defence pact. In return, Pyongyang is getting hard currency, battlefield experience, weapons technology and wider political and economic cooperation.

Russian and Chinese support for United Nations sanctions on North Korea has collapsed in the past two years, according to analysis in The Guardian, leaving the sanctions regime that once constrained Pyongyang largely hollow. For investors watching the region, the shifts show up first in defence and energy markets — the kind of moves tracked on Meyka’s US stock screener and the most active US stocks.

What Kim Jong Un’s visit means for diplomacy

Trump, APEC and the 50 per cent chance

US President Donald Trump has been eager to restart talks with North Korea, but US and South Korean officials see fading chances of him meeting Kim this year. Kim Jong Un has rebuffed Trump’s proposal to revive diplomacy, calling for Washington to abandon its “hostile policy” and drop denuclearisation as a precondition.

South Korea’s spy agency told lawmakers last month that it saw a 50 per cent possibility of a Trump–Kim meeting on the sidelines of next month’s APEC summit in Shenzhen, China. Whether the Dandong visit makes that meeting more or less likely is an open question: Kim arrived in China as a leader with options, not as one asking for a favour.

What to watch next

Analysts expect the initial rise in trade across the Yalu bridge to be modest, but they say it could become a bellwether for Sino–North Korean ties. One expert quoted by The Guardian was “not particularly optimistic” that the new crossing would improve the lives of ordinary North Koreans or lead to reform in Pyongyang.

The near-term signals to watch are concrete: whether container traffic across the bridge picks up, whether North Korean state media acknowledges the trip and what it says about it, and whether Kim’s calendar points toward Shenzhen and a possible meeting with Trump next month.

For now, the picture is of a leader who has spent two years building bridges — literal ones to China and Russia, and political ones away from Washington — and who used a Saturday in October to walk across the newest of them.
