A geisterfahrer caused a major emergency on Switzerland’s A2 motorway on Thursday evening. A 58-year-old driver from the canton of Zurich drove about 10 km the wrong way near the Gotthard road tunnel in Ticino before crashing head-on into a police car. Two police officers were seriously injured and the driver was moderately hurt. The geisterfahrer Gotthard incident has surged on Google Trends Switzerland, with search interest up 1,000%, and shut down a section of the A2 for rescue and forensic work.
What happened: geisterfahrer Gotthard on the A2
Shortly before 21:30 on Thursday, several road users reported a wrong-way driver on the A2 near Faido in Ticino, in the Valle Leventina. When a police patrol arrived, the driver accelerated instead of stopping, ignored a red light, and turned onto the motorway before the Gotthard road tunnel, heading into oncoming traffic. He then broke through a police roadblock and collided head-on with a patrol car, Blick reports.
The 58-year-old, a resident of the canton of Zurich, was heading north on the A2 when he began his roughly 10 km wrong-way run. Despite the roadblock and the arriving patrol, he kept going until the head-on crash with the police car, according to the Tages-Anzeiger.
Geisterfahrer Gotthard crash: three injured, A2 closed
The two officers suffered serious injuries and the driver moderate injuries. All three received first aid at the scene and were taken to hospital. The affected stretch of the A2 was closed for rescue operations and accident recording, while emergency and forensic teams worked through the night, as covered in the NZZ’s Swiss police news roundup.
The A2 through the Gotthard is Switzerland’s main north-south transit corridor, so a closure there is felt far beyond the accident scene — especially with freight traffic depending on the route.
Why geisterfahrer crashes are so dangerous
Wrong-way driving on a motorway is among the most dangerous things that can happen on a road. At motorway speeds, drivers approaching a geisterfahrer have only seconds to spot the danger and react, and the combined closing speed of a head-on collision leaves little margin. Swiss police treat such reports as a top priority, which is why this incident drew a large-scale response with a roadblock on the motorway.
Geisterfahrer Gotthard: what happens next
The two injured officers and the driver remain in hospital. The investigation continues, and the A2 section was closed while rescue teams and forensic specialists secured the scene.
