The France shooting that shook Trappes, a town south-west of Paris, on Friday 23 October 2026 has been described by President Emmanuel Macron as a “terrorist and racist attack”. One person was killed and five others were injured after a gunman opened fire from his car in a rampage that lasted around 15 minutes, targeting people for their skin colour or religion.

Here is everything we know about the Trappes France shooting so far.

What happened in the France shooting in Trappes

The France shooting began at about 10:30am local time on Friday morning. A 39-year-old man drove through Trappes and the neighbouring town of La Verrière, firing an automatic weapon from his car, according to reports from AFP and French media. The gunman struck at least three locations, including a petrol station, a medical centre and a playground. He was eventually arrested and detained on the main N10 road in La Verrière. Police say he drove a grey Renault Clio and used an older-style semi-automatic weapon.

Why France is calling the shooting a racist terrorist attack

Speaking after visiting Trappes, President Macron said the France shooting marks a turning point for the Republic and the nation, adding that this was the first time there had ever been a random racial killing of this kind in the country. France’s anti-terrorism prosecutor’s office (PNAT) has opened an investigation into murder in connection with a terrorist enterprise, along with charges of possession of a Category A weapon and conspiracy with a terrorist group. Interior Minister Laurent Nunez said the gunman had clearly committed a terrorist attack. Trappes Mayor Ali Rabeh described the France shooting as a racist and probably Islamophobic attack, saying the gunman fired randomly and intended carnage. Prime Minister Sebastien Lecornu called the incident very serious.

Who the Trappes shooting suspect is

French media have named the suspect as Kevin T, a 39-year-old man known to police but not to intelligence services. He was not on France’s security threat list, and his four previous criminal convictions had been automatically expunged. A member of the suspect’s immediate family circle was also taken into custody as investigators work to establish whether anyone else was involved in planning the France shooting.

Victims of the France shooting

One person was killed in the attack. Five others were injured, three of them seriously, including a 12-year-old girl who was shot eight times and required surgery. Her mother said her daughter had been wearing a headscarf and was born in Trappes. The ABC reported that the girl was in a serious but stable condition, while the BBC noted that Macron stressed the victims were targeted solely because of their religion and skin colour.

What happens next in the investigation

The PNAT terror investigation is ongoing, and authorities have not ruled out further arrests. Security across France has been heightened, and the government has signalled a tougher response to racially motivated violence. The France shooting came just days after riots had already put French authorities on high alert, adding to a tense political atmosphere in the country.

Why investors watch events like the France shooting

Major security incidents can move markets, even briefly. France is one of Europe’s largest economies, and political stability is a factor investors price into European equities. During periods of heightened tension, traders often monitor the Europe market overview and run scans on the Europe stock screener to spot unusual moves in French-listed companies and banks.
