Ampol Refinery Shutdown Extended: Lytton Delay Cuts Christmas Fuel Supply

The Ampol refinery shutdown has been extended, with the fuel giant delaying the restart of its Lytton refinery in Brisbane after bringing forward maintenance work on its catalytic cracking unit. The delay cuts roughly 150 million litres of gasoline, diesel and jet fuel from fourth-quarter output — raising fears over Australia’s refined-fuel supplies heading into Christmas.

For ASX investors, the timing is awkward. Ampol shares fell as much as 7% on the news, even as the company reported a record quarter of refining margins. Here is what happened at Lytton and what it means for the stock.

Ampol Refinery Shutdown: What Happened at Lytton

Ampol extended the maintenance program at its Lytton refinery after an inspection of the Fluidised Catalytic Cracking Unit (FCCU) — the unit that turns heavy crude fractions into higher-value products like gasoline and diesel. The company cut its fourth-quarter production forecast for higher-value products as a result, with the shutdown trimming about 150 million litres of output.

The Lytton refinery is one of only two remaining refineries in Australia, making its output a pillar of the country’s domestic fuel security. The extended outage arrives as Middle East geopolitical tensions constrain global fuel-product supplies, adding pressure to an already tight market ahead of the Christmas travel season.

The shutdown timing is also politically charged. Ampol has pushed back the commissioning of its Ultra Low Sulfur Fuels project to the first quarter of 2027, while the extra reliability work now underway suggests the company is prioritising long-term plant health over short-term output.

Investors tracking the Australian energy sector can watch refining margins and sector moves on the AU market screener and the most active board.

Why 150 million litres matters

To put the figure in context: Australian fuel demand peaks over the summer holiday period, and domestic refining capacity has already shrunk sharply over the past decade. With Lytton supplying a meaningful share of Queensland’s fuel, the delay tightens local supply just as seasonal demand ramps up — the exact scenario that pushed Christmas fuel supply fears onto the front pages.

Record Refining Margins Meet a Falling Share Price

The irony of the Ampol refinery shutdown is that it overshadows one of the strongest quarters the refinery has ever had. Ampol’s Lytton Refiner Margin more than doubled to US$23.92 per barrel in the third quarter of 2026, up from US$10.64 a year earlier. Group RCOP EBIT grew in the third quarter versus the second-half 2025 quarterly average, driven by the integrated supply chain.

Total group sales volume reached 6,245 million litres in the quarter, up 3.6% year on year, with Australian wholesale volumes down 19% and international volumes up 23%. Yet the market chose to focus on the maintenance delay: shares slid as much as 7% to A$40.00, their lowest level since late August.

What to watch next

Three things will decide how the story plays out. First, how long the FCCU maintenance actually takes — any further extension deepens the Q4 output hit. Second, whether strong refining margins persist into 2027, which would reward investors who look past the outage; keep an eye on momentum shifts via the AU top gainers board. Third, the Ultra Low Sulfur Fuels commissioning timeline, now expected in the first quarter of 2027, which unlocks higher-value production for years.
